If you watch “The Boondocks” on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim, a smart controversial adaptation of a comic strip of the same name from creator Aaron McGruder, then you know who Uncle Ruckus is. He’s a silver-tongued Uncle Tom with a passion for country music. When the crew behind the series mentioned recently that a huge Boondocks related news was forthcoming, everybody thought it would be a renewal for the fourth season. While that is still a possibility, it wasn’t the news they announced.
Behold, a teaser trailer for a possible Uncle Ruckus live-action film.
The crew started a Kickstarter page, a site where you donate money to get projects up and running, for the potential movie and their goal is only $200,000. That’s the asking price of the project and they’ve opted to go this route because it is an odd concept that’s hard to pitch and they can’t (or won’t) get Sony or any other corporate entities to back the film. As for why they’re making a live action film instead of an animated feature, here’s what Aaron McGruder had to say:
“There’s always been interest in a live-action Boondocks movie, which to me was out of the question considering Huey and Riley are essentially impossible to cast. The animated feature would cost around 20 million, but a live action Uncle Ruckus movie could cost a fraction of that. So just for the hell of it we had the costume made and it was pretty amazing. To see Gary actually transform into Uncle Ruckus… it’s quite the surreal experience. I never expected the transition to be so completely seamless.”

I didn’t realize it was the actual voice actor who got dressed up like his animated counterpart in the teaser. That alone makes me want to fund this project. Anyway, you can check out their Kickstarter page here if you want to donate. They also list a package of goodies they offer depending on how much you invest in the movie, which include free music tracks, free DVDs, and signed scripts. If you got a few dollars to spare and you like “The Boondocks,” then maybe you ought to throw some money towards the project.
